Smith and Wesson revolvers are distinguished by their frame size:
- J Frame : .22, .38 Special and .357 Magnum (smallest frame)
- K/L Frame: .22, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, 9 mm (middle frame)
- N Frame : .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44, .45, 9 mm, 10 mm (large frame)
- X Frame : .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .460/.500 S&W Magnum (very large frame)
Earlier models have a SB (square butt) or RB (round butt)
.
Since the middle of the 90s S&W only produces RB (round butt)
.
RB Conversions look like SB grips in shape, but require an RB frame
.
We also differentiate between the shape:
- Combat: with rounded back
- Target: with straight back
